Being a manager is a great accomplishment of your career path. It does not only mean you have reached and conquered a higher position that might require years of experiences and hard work, but also means that an employer sees and trusts that you are a qualified person who has leadership skills that can benefit their company.
However, a great position always comes with greater responsibilities. Being a manager is not certainly as easy as having subordinates to be bossed around. It also does not mean you have someone to do your job while you chill all day, browse the internet, watch YouTube and get paid higher.
Great managers know that they have got huge responsibilities to bear in which one of them is to make sure that their subordinates work in line with them to strive for success. Unfortunately, not all managers have that one skill to manage their subordinates very well without having the subordinates hate them.
A lot of managers would preach about the importance of accomplishing goals or targets set by the companies, but not many of them would notice that one of the keys to a successful business is a bunch of content and satisfied employees.
In leading a team at work, managers should have the capability to understand what makes their team content so that they could continue to work hard and contribute to a greater success. And nope, we are not going to talk about how much employees should earn to feel content at work. While getting paid well might be one of the key indicators to keep your subordinates content, your attitude towards them actually makes a greater impact on their satisfaction at work.
Here are some of the things that all managers should pay attention to:
1. Compliment your team
When your team has done a great job at work, do not forget to compliment them. A simple “you’ve done a great job!” really does make a difference. It makes your subordinates feel appreciated and valued. I could bet that for employees, having an appreciative manager is much more important than having a manager who steals all the credits when the team does a great job.
2. Don’t compare one person with another
Everyone makes mistakes, so do your subordinates. While their mistakes might get on your nerves sometimes, do not ever compare one subordinate with another. Avoid saying “you’ll never be like him” or “why don’t you ever be like her?.” While it does not only hurt the one subordinate you are saying it to, you also turn the tables on the other subordinate you compare. It only backfires you to compare your subordinates since comparing might create team divisions and envious among your subordinates.
3. Trust your team’s capabilities
Trusting your team to do their job is a good thing to build a strong team and develop a great team work. However, there are still a lot of managers who do not fully trust their subordinates to do their own job. Instead of encouraging them that they can do their job well, these types of managers would actually say “let me do this job.” To begin with, it is clearly a wrong move for managers to make, because not only your subordinates would feel like you do not trust them, they would also feel like they are not capable or good enough to do their own jobs.
4. Always encourage your team
There will always be that one time when your team does not perform very well at work. However, when you are in this situation, do not lose temper. Understand that your subordinates do not only live to work. Like you do, they also have families, friends, and relatives and sometimes they have problems with their personal lives that might affect their performance at work.
While there is no excuse to bring their personal lives’ problems to work; some people have bigger problems that they cannot cope with in one night. As a good manager, try to discuss with your subordinates about their poor performance by using a positive language. Encourage them and ask how you can help them to improve their performance at work. Not only will this help lift up your subordinates’ spirits, it will also make them feel that you care about them. Avoid belittling your subordinates since it will only add more problems to their lives.
After all, your subordinates’ satisfaction at work comes from what you tell to and how you treat them. Your selection of words when speaking to your subordinates contributes to a greater success at work. Your words can do magic and they may either discourage or encourage your subordinates. They could earn you an utmost respect or an utter disrespect. However, the power is all yours to control on how you are going to choose your words.
